Autistic Pride Day: Mental Health Resources

In celebration of Autistic Pride Day on June 18th, NC Cutting Edge Counseling is excited to share a list of neurodiversity affirming mental health providers in North Carolina. Click here to access the google doc of providers.

This list is a living document, if you want to be added to the list or know of other great providers for autistic people, email Haley Rognstad at haley@nccec.com.

The world of affirming therapy for autistic people is in its infancy. Autistic care has historically had a very narrow view of autistic traits and has been dominated by modalities developed to help people mask their autism. This has left countless individuals undiagnosed and unaware that their brains function uniquely. These late diagnosed and self-diagnosed individuals face daily challenges, overstimulation, and overwhelm that often leads to burnout. Individuals who did receive an autism diagnosis and therapy designed to mask their autism may now feel deeply disconnected from themselves and unable to access authentic agency in their lives. The first step towards a functional and fulfilling life is understanding how your brain works. I highly recommend reading Dr. Devon Price's book, Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity, and taking a look at our provider list linked above. An informed mental health provider can assist in self-discovery and help you find tools to make life more functional and accessible in this neurotypical world.
